I took the long walk back to my office, stopping off at the security gate to catch up with Roger, my favourite of all our security officers. I considered him one of my chief âtestersâ and often dropped by with cake or cookies. His wife was a keen baker, too, and his waistline showed the effects of two women spoiling him with baked goods.
He showed me some photos of his six-month-old grandson and told me how adorable he was. Whilst we were talking, I watched Ginger pull up in her car. She waved enthusiastically at me before handing a dress in a protective bag over to a member of the Romeo and Juliet production team. Presumably it was the dress that Joyce had helped her alter last night.
I chose not to take the opportunity to talk to her about her brother; it would need some delicate handling and I didnât want to ambush her.
Roger waved at her as she drove off.
âDo you know Ginger?â I asked.
âA little. Iâve seen her around over the years, but more since sheâs been helping with the play. I had to tell her about that director gettinâ killed.â
âHow come? Iâd have thought one of the cast would have phoned her.â
âWell, she was âere. Sheâd come to pick up Miranda. Like her personal taxi service, she was. She was waiting, and of course Miranda didnât appear when the event was meant to finish at nine. Ginger came to ask me if the reception was over or if theyâd decided to rehearse late. By that time, youâd already found her and weâd called the police.â
âHow long had she been on site?â
âLet me think. Iâd just come back from doing me rounds and I walked across the front of the building. She was parked up by the entrance to the car park â I remember cos I waved. A little while later, you radioed us about the body, and shortly after that, she came to talk to me. Now, you radioed at nine minutes past nine; I remember that cos I wrote it down and realised it was one of those palindrome things. So working backwards, I must have walked past her car at about eight-fifteen. Is it important?â
I paused before shaking my head. âNo, it just helps me work out the order of a few things.â Roger didnât look convinced, but I didnât want to put any ideas in his head. Heâs a lovely man, but the security office is a hotbed of gossip. The last thing I wanted was a rumour flying around that Ginger was the killer, but sadly, that was the thought now lodging itself in my head.
